Latvia proposes to invite Croatia, Albania and Macedonia to NATO

As Latvia believes, Croatia, Albania and Macedonia are to be invited to NATO at the Bucharest summit (Romania) in April 2008. As a REGNUM correspondent was told at the Latvian foreign ministry, the statement was made today by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Edgars Rinkēvičs in Bucharest at an opening ceremony of the Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation. According to him, for the time being, the countries need to continue the successive process of the Euro-Atlantic integration by implementing the Membership Action Plan.

Besides, Rinkēvičs appreciated Georgia’s achievements on the way to the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization. He also confirmed Latvia’s readiness to continue cooperation with all Black Sea countries both at governmental and non-governmental levels.

The events in the frameworks of the inaugurating the Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation are being held in Bucharest on October 22 and 23. The trust was formed under the auspices of the German Marshall Fund of the United States in order to promote cooperation and principles of democratic governance in the region and is now active in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. Latvia supports its activity and is a partner-country of the fund for cooperation.
