Settlement of Kosovo issue under Ahtisaari’s plan contradicts Ukrainian interests – Ukrainian politician
The Kosovo issue is unambiguously a precedent and its settlement under the Martti Ahtisaari plan is not in favor and contradicts interests of Ukraine, which has Crimea and to which Abkhazia and Transdnestr are relatively near, Ukrainian politician, former chair of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada Committee for Foreign Relations and CIS Affairs, former head of the Ukrainian mission to the Council of Europe Boris Oleynik told a REGNUM correspondent in Kiev today.
According to Oleynik, Ukrainian diplomats should better make founded statements and assessments of the issue.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk announced that Ukraine would support sovereignty of Kosovo in case the UN passed an appropriate resolution on it.
If the UN passes a resolution on it, we shall support Kosovo as a sovereign state. We must provide full-fledged functioning to the government and social guarantees. It is Ukraine’s official position, Yatsenyuk particularly said. The Ukrainian foreign minister also noted that the situation in Kosovo is unique and, henceforth, it cannot be applied to other troubled regions like Transdnestr, Ossetia, Nagorno Karabakh. Besides, Arseny Yatsenyuk stressed that there would be no conflicts in today’s Ukrainian territory similar to those in Transdnestr, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
