Konstantin Kosachev: EU’s decision to send its mission to replace UN mission contradicts UN Security Council resolution
The decision of the European Union to send its mission to Kosovo instead of the UN mission is unlawful and cannot be accepted by Russia as well as other UN member-states. As a REGNUM correspondent informs, the announcement was made today, on February 5, by the head of the Russian State Duma Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev.
Kosachev called another very deplorable stage the adoption of a decision made by the 27 EU member-countries to deploy a civil mission in Kosovo. De facto the process was launched in the beginning of this decade, when the Kosovo leadership was told that sooner or later the independence will be recognized, said the Russian MP.
I can only express regret in connection with the decision, because it contradicts the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1244, the head of the committee believes. Kosachev reminded that in accordance with the resolution the status of the territory can be changed only by a UN Security Council resolution.
So, the decision is, to my mind, unlawful and cannot be accepted by Russia and all countries that respect the UN Charter, concluded Kosachev.
