Abkhazia’s foreign minister discusses Kosovo situation in Moscow
On February 14, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin had a meeting with Abkhazia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba. As the information and press department of the Russian foreign ministry informs, during the meeting, the parties discussed the new situation, which has occurred in the light of possible declaration of independence by Kosovo. It is ascertained that in case Kosovo’s independence is recognized by a number of countries without taking into account the UN Security Council resolutions, an approach will be applied to settling regional conflicts based on the double-standard policy. It is unacceptable for the Russian Federation, as it has been repeatedly announced before. In this connection, the parties discussed directions of future interaction between Moscow and Sokhumi.
During the discussion, they also touched upon matters concerned with the next meeting of the Secretary-General’s Group of Friends of Georgia in Geneva on February 18-19 with participation of the parties in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. They noted absence of a realistic strategy of the conflict settlement at the Georgian party, the unwillingness of Tbilisi to accept advice and recommendations by the international community regarding taking the negotiations out of the deadlock. The Abkhaz party expressed its readiness for further interaction with the UN in searching for ways of promotion the negotiation process.
