Opinion: Non-allied status is the only way for peaceful existence of Ukraine
Ukraine’s joining to the NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) is the most part of the process entering the alliance, Inna Bogoslovskaya, a member of the Regions Party, made the announcement during a round-table discussion of the parliamentary crisis in Ukraine on February 20, reports a REGNUM correspondent in Kiev.
According to her, when all actions to bring Ukraine to NATO standards are taken, there will be no need to ask anything from anyone. The whole procedure lies within the MAP, and it is followed by a formal application for membership only, the MP believes. The question of Ukraine's geopolitical choice determines main directions of the country’s general development. Joining the MAP means, of course, determination of the geopolitical choice, Bogoslovskaya is sure.
According to her, Ukraine must be a self-sufficient, powerful state, neutral and non-allied. This is the only way of peaceful existence being surrounded by three global socio-political and religious systems: it is the Eurasian space in the north-east, there is the EU in the west, and there is the Muslim world in the south. Ukraine is the only country, which is surrounded by three different socio-political, economic and religious models. The country comprises the three these models in itself. That is why Pope John Paul II when visiting Ukraine said the country's historic mission was to become a bridge between the western and eastern civilizations, the MP noted.
Bogoslovskaya also said that the Regions Party insists that Ukraine must find its own place in the global security system. That is why the NATO question is incommutable, she summarized.
