Duma Speaker: If Georgia joins NATO, parliament will become radical about Abkhazia and South Ossetia
If Georgia joins NATO, Duma will suggest most serious measures regarding Abkhazia and South Ossetia, REGNUM cites chairman of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Boris Gryzlov to state on March 20.
He informed that on March 21, Duma at a plenary session is hearing on the lower house's project “On the policy of the Russian Federation regarding Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transdnestr.” The document is supposed to elaborate on recommendations worked out in the hearings “On the state of settling conflicts in the territory of the CIS and appeals to the Russian Federation on recognition of independence of Republic of Abkhazia, Republic of South Ossetia, and Transdnestr Moldavian Republic” held on March 13.
In Gryzlov's words, “a number of factions have suggested that some theses are made more precise at the hearings.” “We understand that Georgia today is being pulled into the process of joining NATO. This cannot but concern us, when a neighboring state wants to become a NATO member. This is the right of Georgia, but if this happens, we will have to take corresponding steps,” Gryzlov said. “And we are concerned about the fate of the Abkhaz and South Ossetian people,” he added.
Gryzlov has stated that, in case of Georgia's joining NATO, “all measures related to security of Russia's citizens living on the territory will be taken.” “So we are expecting most radical suggestions in this regard.”
“In any case, today we can speak of developing interregional relations among Abkhazia and South Ossetia and subjects of the Russian Federation. We can speak of creation of Russia's missions on the territory, we can speak of relaxing the border-crossing regime.”
“We are speaking of the unification of the Ossetian people, that is today divided by a border – I am speaking of North Ossetia and South Ossetia. So the real today's situation is clearly defined in the statement, and suggestions for the government will be introduced,” Gryzlov stated.
