Alexei Belyayev, an adviser to a deputy speaker of Russia's Duma  Alexander Babakov was found dead in his Moscow flat with multiple knife wounds. The apartment had been ransacked. The investigation Directorate of the Prosecutor General’s office of Moscow initiated a criminal case upon the murder of Belyaev.

According to Viktoria Tsyplenkova, an aide to the head of the committee’s Moscow office, an investigation group is currently operating in an act. The head of the Investigation Committee at the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, Alexander Bastrykin, has taken personal control over the investigation.
